Guide: Analyze Your Town’s License Plate Reader Data

In our audit of our County’s data that we obtained from a public information request, we focused on pulling together key metrics from both how our own Sheriff’s office searched our data, but also how outside agencies searched our data. We totaled from all available months of data:

  • Percent of searches lacking license plate information

  • Frequency and distribution of searches over time

  • Keyword occurrences (e.g., vague reasons given for the search such as “investigation” or “intel,” sensitive reasons such as "ICE")

  • Top users and outside agencies searching our system

These files are pretty large, so we suggest you reach out for help if you’re having trouble using excel or Google Sheets to look around in them.

These metrics provided actionable insights into how local law enforcement was utilizing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) data and surveillance tools. We sent it to:

  • Our Sheriff’s Office - the purchaser and administrator of our county’s flock system

  • County Commissioners

  • City Councils

  • City Mayors

  • Other stakeholders like advocates for victims of Domestic Violence

  • Local online groups of neighbors
